The most-active March contract tumbled to a fresh life-of-contract low of $1,287 a tonne, before settling at $1,290, down $35 -- or nearly three percent -- on the day. On the continuous weekly chart today's finish was the lowest in 10 months. Second-month May fell $32, to $1,321, while the back months closed $20 to $28 lower. Volume was extremely heavy, at an estimated 19,753 lots. Prices gapped some $10 lower at the outset, quickly setting new lows, as currency-linked selling pressured the market, traders said. Traders said strength in the U.S. dollar against the sterling, hurt the New York market as arbitrage sold dollar-denominated CSCE futures. "It was a technical sell-off," one dealer said. "And the currency did not help matters." The March contract breached technical support at the $1,300 level, activating sell-stops and accelerating the slide, they added. Technically, traders said March should find strong support at $1,280 mark, while resistance was seen near $1,330. "I would be surprised if it broke $1,280 without some fundamental reason," said Refco Inc analyst Ann Prendergast. Prendergast said projections of a smaller 1996/97 Ivorian cocoa crop, coupled with lower production in Ghana, Malaysia and other producing countries, could point to a supply deficit in the future. However, another analyst noted a short-term glut of supply may have contributed to the market's current downturn. "The market is focusing on the tons of cocoa lying around from last year's huge crop," he said. "There are plenty of stocks in producing countries." Ivory Coast port officials told Reuters Wednesday the country's warehouses were swollen to capacity with cocoa following small December shipments. Ivory Coast's total cocoa warehousing capacity has never been disclosed officially but one port source said it was between 380,000 and 390,000 tonnes. 231027 MET jan 97
