After rallying $20 in its previous trading day Tuesday, March cocoa rose $19 today to close at $1,393 a tonne, its highest settlement since Dec 5. Trades were posted from $1,395 to $1,366. Second-month May finished $16 higher at $1,415, while the back months closed up $16 to $21. Prices headed lower at the outset on currency-linked arbitrage selling, but steady trade buying at the lows prevented the market from meeting its preopening call of down $10 to $15, stemming downward momentum. After the bounce back into positive territory, automatic buy-stops were touched off after March breached Tuesday's high of $1,379, according to traders. Sentiment may have also been aided by news of lower Ghananian cocoa arrivals, traders said. Ghana's Cocoa Board said cocoa purchases came in at 11,364 tonnes in the eighth week of the 1996/97 season ending Dec 5 versus 18,833 in the same period last season. Cumulative purchases were 161,270 tonnes at the end of the eighth week compared with 227,491 by Dec 7, 1995, which corresponded to the ninth week of the 1995/96 season. On the charts, traders pegged March resistance at $1,404-$1,408, with near-term support at $1,382-$1,379, then $1,366-$1,362. Today's volume reached an estimated 6,667 lots.
