March delivery ended $13 a tonne lower, at $1,357, after ranging between $1,368 to $1,355. Second-month May fell $11, to close at $1,380, while the back months finished down $9 to $13. With prices posting losses for the fourth consecutive session Wednesday, March cocoa has shed $36, or nearly three percent since the start of the year. Traders said market sentiment may have be dampened by the Dutch fourth quarter cocoa grind. The Dutch reported Tuesday 1996 fourth quarter grindings rose 3.90 percent compared with the same period last year. Industry sources had forecast a fourth quarter rise of about five percent. Traders await the German and U.K. 1996 fourth quarter cocoa grind data, slated for release later this week or early next week. They expected the UK grind to fall by 10 percent on closure of one of Mars plants and the German grind to fall by about two percent. The U.S. fourth quarter grindings are due January 17. On the charts, traders pegged March near-term support at last week's low of $1,350, followed by $1,342. To the upside, resistance was seen at $1,370. Turnover was moderate, at an estimated 8,385 lots. 091009 MET jan 97
