New York opened broadly weaker on the heels of sharp losses posted in London overnight. But after a wobbly start, the market stalled in the $1,352-1,354 range basis March. Trade buying toward the lows helped to offset selling pressure from speculators, dealers said. March delivery fell $8 a tonne on the day, to $1,354, ranging from $1,350, a key psychological level, to $1,358. Second-position May eased $5, to $1,380, while the outer months slipped $4 to $7. On the charts, March would need to hold above $1,342 to look constructive, while resistance was pegged at $1,358-1,360, and then at $1,380-1,382. "March has to get thru $1,380-1382 to do anything," said one trader. Meanwhile, the latest arrivals data from Ivory Coast contained few surprises, traders said. Ivorian arrivals stood at around 400,000 tonnes by mid-December, exporters said Monday, down from 540,000 tonnes at this time last year. While most analysts expect this year's crop to come in well below last year's record yield, traders said a clearer picture of the harvest will emerge as January shipments are posted. Volume on the day reached 4,424 lots. The CSCE will hold a shortened session on Tuesday, December 31, before New Year's Eve. Cocoa futures trading will close at 1200 EST/1700 GMT. The CSCE will be closed Wednesday, January 1, in observance of New Year's Day. 311103 MET dec 96
