After gapping lower at the open, the widely-watched March contract never recovered to the plus side. Prices held at moderately lower levels for much of the session, but a late-day bout of speculative liquidation pushed the market toward its intraday floor by the closing bell. Nearby March futures fell $12 per tonne, to $1,368, settling near the day's low of $1,366. Second-month may slid $13, while the outer months ended off $12 to $15. The day's volume was estimated at a sparse 3,828 lots. Over the past few days, persistent selling by origin countries, and Ivory Coast in particular, has prevented cocoa from posting significant gains. But scale-down industry buying has provided a solid floor, confining the market to a relatively narrow range. With many operators sidelined for the Christmas and New Year's holidays, business was likely to remain muted until early January, they said. CSCE cocoa futures trading will close at 1200 EST/1700 GMT on Tuesday after a shortened session.
