"The grind data were not very helpful," ananalyst said. March delivery ended down $5 at $1,352 a tonne, its lowest close since Nov 12, after ranging between $1,356 and $1,345. Second-month May slipped $6 to $1,374, while the back months finished down $4 to $6. Turnover reached an estimated 12,042 lots, up from Wednesday's official tally of 8,712 lots. Prices came under pressure at the opening on fund liquidation after the release Thursday of bearish German fourth quarter grind figures, dealers said. The German cocoa grind dropped by 21.2 percent to 56,254.7 tonnes in fourth quarter 1996 from 71,375.0 tonnes in the same period in 1995. Analysts estimated the data to be down by some two percent from comparable 1995. The March contract quickly broke through critical support at $1,350, but trade and manufacturer in the mid-$1,340s prevented a test of March's next level of support at $1,342 and prompted locals to cover short positions. Traders said slightly better-than-expected U.K. grind numbers also released Thursday may have helped temper the German data. U.K. fourth quarter 1996 cocoa grind fell by 3.3 percent to 45,147 tonnes when compared with 46,688 in the same period in 1995. Industry sources had expected the grind to decline by up to ten percent in the quarter from the year before. Technically, traders said the market appeared to be oversold. They pegged March near-term chart resistance at $1,358-$1,360, then $1,370. "If anyone needs to do any buying, these are favorable levels," the analyst said.
