March delivery ended down $9 a tonne, at $1,329, its lowest settlement since March 21, after ranging narrowly between $1,336 to $1,328. Second-month May closed $8 lower, at $1,356, while the back months finished $1 to $10 weaker. The market opened lower on currency-linked selling, traders said, as strength in the U.S. dollar against the sterling, spurred some selling in favor of the London market. But light scale-down manufacturer buying stemmed losses and prevented the active March contract from breaching near-term chart support at $1,328 a tonne. Technically, traders pegged March's next level of support at $1,322, its life-of-contract low. Resistance was seen near $1,349. Despite dropping to its lowest level in months, traders said speculative interest in the market remained subdued, with turnover reaching only an estimated 4,653 lots. "The specs are really out of it. They have positions but not big ones," one trader said. "There is no trend, it has been a flat market for two years. It is hard to get enthusiastic." 211054 MET jan 97
