One trader said today's downturn may have been in anticipation of a disappointing U.S. fourth quarter grind. "People are considering the European grinds and selling ahead of the U.S. numbers," he said. March delivery fell $9 a tonne on the day, to $1,338, after ranging between $1,347 to $1,332. Second-month May eased $6 to close at $1,364, while the back months finished $6 to $9 weaker. The U.S. fourth quarter cocoa grind data, slated for release on Friday at 0845 EST, are expected rise three to five percent compared with the 1995 fourth quarter grind figures, industry sources said. On the charts, traders pegged March near-term support at $1,331, a double bottom, with the next support level seen at $1,322, its life-of-contract low. Resistance was put at $1,349, with buy-stops building near $1,351. Turnover was light, at an estimated 5,865 lots.
