After sinking for four straight days, March cocoa rallied $20 a tonne Tuesday, to close at $1,374. Trades were posted from $1,359 to $1,379. Commodity funds were good buyers at the open, traders said, with scattered manufacturer interest seen at the lows. Continued weakness on the U.S. dollar versus the British pound also benefitted New York, as operators switched out of sterling-denominated London cocoa. "The dollar is weak (against sterling)," said one broker. "That's why we're up $20 today." But today's swift run-up belied what was a largely uneventful year. The March contract drifted within a $100 band for much of 1996, ending the year just $8 shy of where it began. "It was a nothing year," said one trader. "The market was very much at equilibrium." Whether the trend will continue in 1997 depends mainly on crop results from leading producer Ivory Coast. So far this season, arrivals sharply trail their year-ago levels. While shipments have generally kept pace with market expectations, traders said they would be paying close attention updated crop forecasts due out in January. On the charts, $1,380-1,382 was seen as a key upside target for March, while support was pegged at $1,342. Today's volume reached 3,969 lots in a shortened, three-hour session. The exchange will be closed January 1 in observance of New Year's Day. Normal trading resumes on Thursday, January 2. 021043 MET jan 97
