With few fresh fundamentals to inspire the market, many traders opted to extend their Christmas holiday break into the weekend. Volume on the exchange floor was extremely light, reaching only 2,515 lots by the close. A sharp rise in the British pound against the U.S. dollar weighed heavily on sterling-denominated London cocoa, and helped to limit New York's downturn, traders said. The sterling rose to a new 50-month high against the dollar on Friday, peaking at $1.6945 late in the day. New York's March delivery fell $4 a tonne, to $1,362, trading from $1,361 to $1,374. May eased $3, to $1,385, while the remaining months ended down $6 to $8. If the March contract is able to withstand a test of support at $1,358-1,360, traders said the market could attempt to retest recent highs in the $1,390-1,400 range. But they cautioned that turnover was likely to remain light through the end of next week. 301114 MET dec 96
