Steady speculative selling pushed the most-active March contract to a fresh life-of-contract low of $1,312 a tonne, before the market managed to recover, they said. March delivery ended down $4 a tonne, at $1,325, just beneath the session high of $1,322. Second-month May fell $3, to $1,353, while the back months finished $1 to $7 weaker. Technically, traders said March should find strong psychological support at $1,300 mark. Resistance was seen near $1,330. In fundamental news, General Cocoa said in a weekly report cumulative Ivory Coast arrivals were "guesstimated" at some 625,000 tonnes through January 11, compared with an estimated 740,000 tonnes at the same time last year. The report said estimates for the 1996/97 Ivorian main crop remained at some 900,000 tonnes, but that the preliminary forecast for the 1997 mid crop was "somewhat pessimistic" due to dry weather in the cocoa growing regions. "While it is much too early for any reliable estimates, initial trade forecasts range from 110,000 to 150,000 metric tons," it said. Traders said the slow pace of arrivals pointed to a smaller 1996/97 Ivorian cocoa crop, which has been already been largely priced into the market. The 1995/96 Ivorian crop was estimated at a record 1.2 million tonnes. Volume was moderate, at an estimated 8,264 lots. 221039 MET jan 97
