Prices idled near unchanged for most of the day, with only a handful of trades being executed by midday. The market returned to life ahead of the close when speculators stepped in to square positions, but trade-house selling quickly capped the rally. "There was some year-end short-covering, and light stops were hit above $1,635 (in March)," said one broker. March futures rose $16 a tonne on the day to $1,641, trading from $1,619 to $1,648. The back months all rose $12 or $13. Estimated volume by the close was a scant 2,061 lots. Technically, traders eyed a gap at $1,612-1,608 in March, while last week's high of $1,660 was seen as an important upside target. Traders said they expected the week's muted tone to continue into tomorrow, the final trading day of the year. The CSCE will be closed on Thursday, January 1, and Friday, January 2, in observance of the New Year's holiday. 311045 MET dec 97
