In a pattern that mimicked last Friday's performance, cocoa prices sold off at the outset, only to reverse and swing higher by the close. A downturn on the British pound versus the dollar sparked the weakness early in the session, as dealers took advantage of the more favorable arbitrage to sell dollar-denominated New York futures against the sterling-traded London market. But the market held an important support target and gradually worked its way back into positive territory by the close. "There is very little follow-through selling," said one broker, adding, "A lot of this buying is short-covering." Benchmark March futures rose $6 a tonne to close at $1,762, the highest since late June. The contract traded between $1,719 and $1,766. Cocoa prices have risen $102 since the beginning of December, a gain of 13 percent. There was little fresh news to give the market impetus, but traders said a batch of positive underlying fundamentals have contributed to the market's recent bull run. Traders cited a slight lag in cocoa shipments from Ivory Coast versus year-ago rates, as well as a pick-up in consumer demand and steady buying from the manufacturing sector. Technically, March futures held just above support at $1,718, and managed to eclipse last Friday's intraday high by $5 a tonne. To the upside, March faced a key hurdle at $1,803, its life-of-contract high. The day's volume was estimated at 9,249 lots. 161141 MET dec 97
