Bellwether March futures rose $2 a tonne to $1,695, after trading from $1,683 to $1,707. May futures rose $4 to $1,724, with the back months also climbing $4 per tonne. A mixture of industry and currency-linked buying helped to buoy prices for most of the session, but speculative selling kept the gains in check, traders said. For the second day in a row, much of the buying interest resulted from a sharp upturn on the British pound against the U.S. dollar, as traders capitalized on a more favorable arbitrage to buy New York cocoa against the sterling-denominated London market. London's March contrast fell 11 stg to close at 1,096 stg a tonne. The market could get some impetus from the next Commitment of Traders report, which comes out after the close of business on Friday. Traders said they expected the figures to show a net speculative long position of between 10,000 and 12,000 lots through December 16. In other news, port arrivals in Ivory Coast reached about 437,000 tonnes through December 14, compared with 450,000 tonnes during the same period a year earlier, industry sources said. The day's volume on the CSCE was estimated at a light 3,751 lots.
