Benchmark March futures settled at $1,650, unchanged from the previous session. Second-position May eased $2 to $1,682, while the back months finished between $3 and $10 lower. Prices rose at the outset on the back of a firmer performance in London overnight, but the trend reversed after the market failed to complete its sharply higher opening due. Light speculative selling kept the market under pressure for the remainder of the day, but dealers noted that turnover was exceedingly thin ahead of the Christmas break. Looking to next week, market participants said they would continue to monitor the situation at Phibro Inc, which is expected to close its tropical trading operations sometime next year. The commodities trading arm of Travelers Group's Salomon Smith Barney, Phibro has been one of the leading operators in the cocoa trade for several years. It is widely believed to be hold up to 400,000 tonnes of physical cocoa. Talk that Phibro was planning to wind down its operations sent cocoa prices sharply lower at the beginning of the week, but the market took back half its losses on Tuesday.
