Funds hit the market early and hard after the London market tended 8,067 10-tonne delivery notices, which was interpreted as evidence that a healthy cocoa crop from West Africa continues to flow unabated. March cocoa ended at $1,559 a tonne, the low of the day and $23 off last Wednesday's close. The high was posted at $1,572. Today's close is the lowest price for the contract since August 18. Spot December ended at $1,529 a tonne, down $23. "Unless something reveals itself to the contrary, the cocoa market is under the assumption of no significant shortage," said Walter Spilka, an analyst with Smith Barney. "Consumption isn't bad at these levels. It's a good price. But without any fundamental news, the trend in this market is lower." The bulk of the selling came in the first hour of trading, after which volumes petered out. Although the market looks due for a technical correction, any rally is expected to be short-lived, Spilka said. The nine-day relative strength index was at a life-of-contract low, lending to credence expectations for a possible short-covering rally. "But the momentum to this market is really to the downside," one trader said, with a near-term target at $1,540 a tonne, and longer-term support at $1,520. The trade was essentially invisible Monday, with manufacturuers on the sidelines in New York. In fundamental news, Ghanian growers said the weather was favorable for the 1997/98 crop, forecast to reach 350,000 to 400,000 tonnes. The crop totaled 324,000 tonnes in 1996/97. 021211 MET dec 97
