Prices rallied at the outset on the back of a strong performance in London cocoa futures overnight, but buying interest fizzled as March futures approached the closely watched $1,640 level. "We've seen it move higher on spec buying in the last few days, and the specs just weren't there to take it higher today," one trader said. Solid trade-house selling, coupled with scattered price fixing by producer countries, weighed on the market for the remainder of the day, dealers said. Benchmark March fell $11 a tonne to close at $1,618, having traded from $1,642 to $1,611. May futures eased $10 to $1,645, while the remaining months fell between $10 and $16. Chartists noted a minor support area in March beneath today's low and stretching to $1,602, based on a gap created at Monday's opening. To the upside, a chart gap from $1,647-1,651 was expected to offer solid resistance. Volume was light, at an estimated 5,310 lots. 101008 MET dec 97
