The market gapped sharply higher at the opening, aided by gains in London overnight. A brief round of trade selling temporarily pared the gains at midday, but speculators resumed their buying ahead of the close. Traders said the firmer tone reflects a move to consolidate following the market's sharp slide over the past two months. A drop in sterling late last week triggered the initial advance in London, and carried the New York cocoa market higher in sympathy. "We had continued short-covering in a market that is oversold," noted one broker. Benchmark March futures rose $27 a tonne to close at $1,629, near the top of the day's $1,612-1,630 trading range. May futures also gained $27, to close at $1,655. On the charts, today's breach of the $1,608 and $1,620 levels in March was seen as technically constructive, with the next major resistance target put at $1,640. To the downside, an initial objective was noted at the gap created at today's open between $1,602-1,612. Otherwise, market operators displayed little reaction to the latest Commitment of Traders data, which showed speculators to be net long a slim 1,222 lots as of December 2.
