Officials at the company were not available to comment, but rumors that Phibro Inc was on the brink of closing its tropicals desk dominated market discussions today. The spot contract bore the brunt of the losses, as worries that Phibro would seek to liquidate what is thought to be a massive long position weighed on the nearby switches in New York and London. "If people believe that Phibro is getting out, March is a position that could be significantly weakened," said one broker. However, talk that several leading trade houses might take over the long position, as well as uncertainty over the company's intentions, kept further losses at bay. Traders said today's downturn was also a result of the market's failure to pierce chart resistance at $1,720 in March during a rally early in the session. March futures fell $10 to $1,685, after trading from $1,682 to $1,718. May futures eased $7 to $1,717, and the back months ended down $5 to up $11.
