Palm oil prices were steady to firm following a late burst of shortcovering in Asia. However, traders in Europe said the market was running counter to the latest Ivan Wong report, which projected lower exports and higher stocks. "I think palm oil prices are losing touch with reality, they should be down following the Wong report," said one trader. Malaysian private forecaster Ivan Wong estimated local palm oil production in October at 912,000 tonnes, down two percent from September, in his latest report. Wong put end-October stocks at 995,000 tonnes against the Palm Oil Registration and Licensing Authority's (PORLA) 877,704 tonnes at end-September. Exports of palm oil were estimated at 650,000 tonnes against PORLA's 721,291 tonnes. Crude palm oil cif Europe was quoted $5 to $7.50 up at the close after Nov traded at $541.00 and Dec at $550 a tonne a tonne cif. RBD palm oil was $2.50 to $7.50 up while olein was $2.50 to $10 higher with no further business reported during the afternoon. Stearin closed $7.50 up, with concern over a possible ban on U.S. beef products underpinning prices. The European Commission said it wanted to ban the use of beef products, which would hit imports of tallow from the U.S. from January 1, 1998 owing to concerns over BSE. However, on Thursday evening European and U.S. firms said they expected a significant breakthrough in the dispute at talks being held on Friday. Coconut oil closed unchanged to $5 up after Nov/Dec traded at $630, Dec/Jan $635, Jan/Feb $635 upto $642.50 and Feb/Mar at $652.50 and $650 a tonne cif. Traders said consumers and origins were the main buyers. Palmkernel oil closed $10 down to unchanged on a neglected market. Soft oils closed with soy oil 3.50 guilders down to unchanged while rape oil was 1.50 to one guilders lower, however traders said the market was thin and prices were easily moved. Some light trading was reported with Nov soy oil fetching 137 and 138 guilders, Dec 131 and Jan 125.50 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Rape oil had one outright trade for Dec at 134 guilders a 100 kilos, while Feb/Apr and May/Jul were traded in a switch with a four guilder spread.
