However, buyers and sellers were mostly far apart, traders said. The weaker ringgit against the dollar and shipping problems kept palm oil steady while the stronger dollar against the guilder and healthy demand for nearby soft oils underpinned that market. Traders in Hamburg and Rotterdam/London reported interest from China for nearby rape oil. "The Chinese are seeking more nearby rape oil, but there isn't any available," said one trader. Traders said EU rape oil supplies are likely to remain tight until February 1998. At the close of business Dutch soyoil was one to 0.50 guilders up after December traded at 129 and 129.50 and Jan at 127 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Dutch/EU rape oil finished one guilder up to 0.50 guilders down with no business reported. Closing crude palm oil offers cif Europe were $7.50 to $5 up while products were unchanged to $5 higher.
