Traders said the market was tending to drift as it sought fresh direction. "We are seeing a few odd trades here and there, but volume is low and no one seems sure in which direction the market is going," said one trader. Reports from the U.S. embassy agriculture attachi, in Kuala Lumpur, that Malaysia's palm oil stocks were estimated at 718,000 tonnes at end-December 1997 from 878,00 tonnes at end-September and 794,000 tonnes at end-December 1996 had no impact on the market. The U.S. embassy also put total output in the last quarter of 1997 at 2.30 million tonnes against 2.60 in October-December last year. "The U.S. embassy report projected stocks at a lower level than some people expected, but no one seemed worried about it," said one European trader. However there did appear to be a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel with traders reporting increasing consumer interest over the last couple of days. "We started seeing some consumer interest on Wednesday afternoon and it is still there today underpinning the market," said another trader. At the close crude palm oil cif Europe was $5 up after Dec traded at $542.50. Only Nov and Dec were offer at the close, but traders said they thought this was just a tactical move by sellers to drew buyers out into the open. Refined palm oil closed with RBD oil unchanged to $2.50 up and olein unchanged to $2.50 down with no further business reported. Coconut oil closed $20 to $17.50 up after Feb/Mar traded at $640 and $645 a tonne cif. However, traders said the jump in prices was not significant owing to the thinness of the market. Palmkernel oil closed $10 to $12.50 up with no trade reported. Dutch soy oil closed unchanged to 0.50 guilders down while rape oil was one guilder up to unchanged, both unchanged from midday and tradeless.
