At the close the palm oil sector stood $2.50 to $7.50 per tonne lower, apart from stearin which ended $2.50 up. Traders saw little impact from the limit-down close on Malaysian palm oil futures triggered by a sharp recovery in the ringgit versus the dollar. "If there further large losses in Malaysia on Thursday, we may then see prices in Europe under stronger pressure, otherwise I think the downside is fairly limited," one trader said. During the morning session palm olein traded Jan/Mar at $560 and $555 per tonne. The soft oils ignored an easier start to the Chicago soybean oil futures, although selling levels could dip if trend in Chicago persists up to its close. Trade on the soft oils was light during the afternoon, but saw 113.50 and 116.50 guilders paid for Nov/Jan soy oil and rape oil respectively. Values closed 0.50 to one guilder firmer. Coconut oil saw earlier reluctant sellers return briefly to the market in the afternoon, but only for small volume trades before once again retreating to the sidelines. Coconut oil traded Oct/Nov at $637.50 and Nov/Dec at $647.50 and $645. Selling levels finished unchanged to $2.50 firmer. Palmkernel oil closed unchanged to $5 firmer but tradeless.
