Benchmark December cocoa slumped $16 per tonne on the day to finish at $1,587, toward the bottom of the day's range of $1,615-1,580. March fell $14 to $1,625, while the remaining months ended down $14 to $4. The New York market edged higher at the start of the day amid fairly steady speculative buying, but the rally fizzled as December neard the closely-watched $1,615 level. Traders said yesterday's finish near the session lows undercut the market's technical stance, making further upside progress difficult. "There has been no follow-through on the rallies," said one broker. Light sell stops were triggered underneath $1,598, the bottom of a chart gap left over from Wednesday. Scale-down trade buying helped to provide support at the lows, dealers said, averting a test of crucial support in the $1,574-1,570 area. An estimated 8,911 lots changed hands on the day.
