Bellwether December futures finished at $1,603 per tonne, up $5 per tonne, but off a peak of $1,623. Second-position March gained $3 to settle at $1,639, while the outer months were unchanged to $2 higher. New York cocoa climbed early in the day, as speculators came in to square short positions following the market's recent slide, traders said. The rally carried December futures through the closely-watched $1,611 level, lifting the contract to a subsequent technical target at $1,623. But producer and trade-house selling weighed in at the highs, and the buying quickly evaporated. Speculative and trade buying lifted the market again at midday, but the uptrend was unable to gather sufficient momentum, dealers said. Traders said worries about potential crop damage from El Nino had been set aside, at least for now, as operators monitor a steady flow of early arrivals in the Ivory Coast. With prices hovering at their lowest level in two months, producer countries are quick to sell into any rally, dealers said. "It looks like there are normal crops coming out of West Africa, and origin longs were taking advantage of any fall to price fix," one New York-based trader said. On the charts, a gap created at today's open from $1,598-1,603 should provide near-term support, with $1,570 seen as the next important objective. To the upside, key targets were noted at $1,623, and then from $1,626-1,629. The day's volume was estimated 7,930 lots. 301050 MET oct 97
