Benchmark December surged $32 a tonne to $1,725, its highest settlement price since reaching $1,730 on July 1. On an intraday basis, today's peak of $1,739 was the highest trade since December hit $1,760 in late August. Traders said today's move higher, which occurred in relatively light volume, was mainly technically inspired. A breach early on of the $1,710-1,711, the top of the market's recent $100 range, activated a round of buy stops, with further fund buying emerging once December punched through the $1,720 level. "It was purely a technical breakout," one trader said. "There was no news behind it. The spec buying continues to outlast the trade and origin selling that we saw today." A firmer U.K. currency also aided New York prices, as traders bought up New York futures against the sterling-denominated London market. The British pound was trading at $1.6225 late Tuesday, up from $1.6255 at Monday's close. While uncertainty surrounding the potential impact of El Nino continues to underpin prices, dealers said the market's fundamental outlook was scarely changed in the past few weeks. In the meantime, rainfall levels appear to be steadily increasing in Ivory Coast, the world's leading cocoa producer, though there remain some lingering concerns about damage from a prolonged dry spell in July and August. U.S.-based forecaster Weather Services Corp called for scattered showers in West Africa through the rest of the week. Following today's advance, traders next looked for December to tackle resistance at $1,760 per tonne. Basis the March contract, chartists noted a trendline extending from early July at $1,760. December support was seen toward $1,698-1,693, a chart gap created at this morning's opening. An estimated 12,634 lots changed hands on the day. 081150 MET oct 97
