After a brief bid to the upside, a wave of commission house liquidation sparked a rapid-fire descent early in the session, dragging December through nearby chart support. Sell stops were touched off below December's recent low of $1,655 per tonne, but scale-down trade buying quickly helped to recoup most of the losess. Renewed speculative selling emerged ahead of the close, adding further pressure to the spot December position. December finished down $11 at $1,667, posting trades from $1,646 to $1,686. Second-position March fell $6 to $1,700, with the outer months off between $6 and $7. Dealers said today's performance, in which prices settled squarely in the middle of their $40 trading range, reflected continued uncertainty about the upcoming West African cocoa harvest. "The market is in a sideways pattern, broadly speaking, and is still waiting for news on the crops in West Africa updates on El Nino and rainfall levels," one trader said. While the market has already factored in a projected supply deficit for the 1997/98 season, the potential risks to crops posed by El Nino should keep the market on edge for some time, he added. An estimtaed 12,776 lots changed hands on the day.
