Disappointment over cocoa's failure to recover from one-month lows set early in the week put some pressure on the market this morning, but the benchmark December contract managed to find support at its recent low of $1,637. Prices idled near unchanged for most of the day, but a renewed bout of speculative selling drove December through the $1,637 mark, activating a host of sell stops. December ended down $16 at $1,628, its lowest settlement since closing at $1,626 per tonne on September 11. Today's downturn follows a $39-slide in cocoa prices on Tuesday. The market has fallen some six percent since rising to a peak of $1,739 early last week. Traders blamed the sharp pullback on an increase in rainfall levels in Ivory Coast, the world's top cocoa grower, as well as the approach of the first exports of the 1997/98 West African crop. "The trading characteristics have changed because you're looking at the start of the crop year," one broker said. Ivory Coast officially opened the 1997/98 season on October 2, but loadings of the new crop have only just begun. Technically, the market faced a major downside objective at $1,611, a low basis December from September 16. If that level were cleared, subsequent support was noted at a chart gap of $1,585-1,570. To the upside, resistance was noted at today's high $1,651. Volume was fairly moderate, at an estimated 9,560 lots.
