Prices oscillated in a relatively wide range, propelled by aggressive speculative selling at the highs and equally persistent manufacturing buying toward the lows. In the early part of the day, currency-linked arbitrage buying against the London market drove New York prices to the day's highs. But commodity funds were eager sellers toward the $1,611 level basis December, which knocked prices back to unchanged. The market dipped back below the closely-watched $1,600 level ahead of the close, but scale-down trade buying helped to avert a test of crucial support at $1,585-1,570. The bellwether December contract fell $6 to settle at $1,593 per tonne, a nine-week low. Trades were posted from $1,589 to $1,612. Traders said a strong showing on the season's first arrivals in Ivory Coast would likely keep the market under pressure in the near term. Industry sources in Abidjan told Reuters Wednesday that between 40,000 and 50,000 tonnes of cocoa had been delivered for export as of October 19. "There is a camp out there that is expecting a late crop, and this is going to allay those fears right away," one New York-based broker said of the arrivals news, which emerged after the close of business in New York. He added that the hefty total could indicate a move by exporters to ship cocoa in anticipation of a further price decline on the world market. "In a falling market, they are going to be quick to declare it and lock in a price," he said. A portion of the new arrivals total could include cocoa from last season's crop, however, dealers said. Otherwise, traders said the market looked poised for a technical bounce following its steep, eight percent drop in the past few weeks. If December were able to clear today's high of $1,612, it would next face resistance at $1,620-1,621. An estimated 12,777 lots were traded on the day. 231132 MET oct 97
