But prices settled well off the day's peaks on the belief that the amount of cocoa destroyed in the fire was relatively small. New York's benchmark December contract rose $10 a tonne to close at $1,677, having traded from $1,663 to a high of $1,698. Second-position March rose $6 to $1,706, while the distant months finished $4 lower to $4 higher. A 1,000-sq. meter storage shed owned by Dutch warehouse operator Handelsveem BV was destroyed by a huge blaze that raged for two or three hours Friday afternoon. There was no official word on how much cocoa had been stored in the warehouse, but U.S. traders said around 20,000 tonnes were likely destroyed in the fire. Dealers said news of the fire gave prices an initial boost in London. A computer glitch suspended trading in New York shortly after the opening, but CSCE prices rallied in tandem once the technical problems were resolved. Prices quickly backed off the highs, however, after it became clear that only a small portion of the cocoa housed in Amsterdam was affected by the blaze. "The market rallied a little bit off of the news, but it's not going to have a major impact," one trader said. Technically, the market encountered resistance just below the closely-watched $1,700 level, where the trade has been a persistent seller in recent weeks.
