Cocoa prices tumbled from the opening, hit by the belief that the market's run-up on Tuesday represented a technical fluke that lacked fundamental backing, traders said. December quickly filling a downside chart gap at $1,698-1,693, but the selling pressure abated toward the $1,690 mark. Scale-down trade buying helped stem the slide, and short-covering by locals later helped push the market back into positive territory. The uptrend was short-lived, however, as a renewed assault by speculators and the trade pressured prices back toward the lows ahead of the close. "It was follow-through selling from yesterday's poor performance," said one broker. "It was really a day where the market was still consolidating." Benchmark December fell $15 a tonne to $1,691, after trading from $1,685 to $1,714. March pulled back $14 to $1,723, while the remaining months closed $14 to $16 lower. December's close beneath the $1,698-1,693 gap suggests the market had yet to exhaust its near-term downside potential. Subsequent support was seen at $1,680, followed by $1,646. To the upside, resistance was pegged at today's peak of $1,714, and then at $1,739. The day's volume was estimated at 6,784 lots.
