At 1130 EST December was $9 higher at $1,588, having traded from $1,585 to $1,611. March futures were $10 higher at $1,626. New York cocoa jumped at the opening, fueled by a wave of currency-linked buying against the London market. But trade-house selling intensified once New York's December contract neared $1,611 a tonne, a key resistance level, forcing a retreat back below $1,600. Sterling surged to a three-month high against the dollar overnight after the U.S. stock market plummeted, but the U.K. currency had pulled back from its early highs by late morning. Dealers noted good support from Monday's intraday low of $1,574 through $1,570, the bottom of a chart gap left over from August. Volume amounted to an estimated 5,352 lots by 1100 EST. 291123 MET oct 97
