The market rallied sharply at the opening, fueled by a reversal in the British pound and constructive CFTC Commitment of Traders data. But origin-linked selling toward last week's intraday highs brought the buying spree to a halt by midday. A sharp decline in the U.K. currency had dragged New York cocoa prices lower on Friday, as operators bought up sterling-denominated London cocoa against New York, but many dealers turned around and sold London this morning as the pound recovered. Traders also cited the latest Commitment of Traders report, which showed speculators to be long 29,048 lots as of September 23, slightly lower than what some players had anticipated. Benchmark December rose $14 a tonne on the day to close at $1,682, having traded from $1,671 to $1,710. March 1998 delivery gained $12 to $1,712. Cocoa prices have managed to punch through the widely-watched $1,700 mark several times in the past week, aided in part by concern about the El Nino weather phenomenon. But increasing rainfall in Ivory Coast, the world's No. 1 cocoa grower, has put a cap on buying interest, traders said. "Although the rain levels were below normal, there has been some rain in the Ivory Coast," said one trader. "The market is just rangebound for the moment and waiting for further crop news and rains." An estimated 6,539 lots changed hands on the day. 301115 MET sep 97
