Benchmark December futures rose $7 to finish at $1,600 per tonne, toward the top of the day's $1,582-1,606 trading range. Second-position March also gained $7 to close at $1,638, while the remaining months all ended $8 higher. Traders said views that cocoa's eight percent slide in the past two weeks had been overdone attracted some chart-driven buying to the market today. Prices swung fairly widely in New York at the outset, as speculators and the trade once again took aggressive positions on opposite sides of the market. The funds prevailed early in the session, pushing the December contract through the closely-watched $1,585-level. But scale-down buying from the manufacturing sector helped to pare the losses, and a round of short-covering late in the day nudged prices back into positive territory before the close. "We chewed our way into the ($1,585-1,570) gap and recovered to settle $18 above the low," one trader said. "The industry is a very eager buyer down here." Traders estimated that the recent slide had shaved 10,000-12,000 lots off of speculators' net long position. The next round of Commitment of Traders data is due out after the close of business on Friday. In the last report tracking market activity through October 7, speculators were net long some 30,000 lots. Also due out after the close on Friday is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's first estimate of global production for 1997/98. Traders said they expected few surprises in the USDA report, which is slated for release at 1500 EDT/1900 GMT. In other news, Ivory Coast exported about 16,000 tonnes of cocoa in the first three weeks of the 1997/98 season, but most of the shipments consisted of last year's crop, industry sources told Reuters in Abidjan Thursday. An estimated 12,902 lots changed hands Thursday.
