Dutch soy oil was offered five to three guilders up at the close although earlier traders had been reluctant to put out prices. "People thought Chicago would open higher on the back of the Chinese rumours, but in the end it came in lower," said one trader. Chicago soy oil futures hit a 5-1/2 month high on Friday on rumours that South American soy oil sales to China had been switched to the U.S. Some traders in Hong Kong and Europe were sceptical. "Early last week they said Europe would have to buy U.S. soy oil to meet high demand and now they are wheeling out the Chinese rumours," said one European trader. Some traders in Hong Kong said they did not know where the Chicago market got its ideas from. However, others said the business was possible. "The south American and European markets have dried up and the U.S. is the only place with oil for sale," said a trader. On Friday traders in Europe reported Chinese interest for more rapeoil, but none is available until February. "China would prefer to buy rape oil but if none is available they will take soy oil," said another trader. Rape oil offers were 3.50 to 0.50 guilders higher, but no close buyers were reported. Tight nearby supplies kept palm oil firm in Europe with crude palm oil $10 up after Dec traded at $557.50 and $560, Jan/Mar at $565 and $570 and May/Jul at $570 a tonne cif. Products were $10 to $15 higher after Nov olein traded at $552.50. The October 1-25 palm oil export data, released by cargo surveyor SGS (M) Sdn Bhd, had little impact on the market. SGS estimated Malaysia's palm oil exports for October 1-25 at 574,126 tonnes against 604,824 tonnes for September 1-25. Coconut oil closed lower with sellers $2.50 to $7.50 down after Jan/Feb traded at $537.50 and $540 and Feb/Mar at $647.50 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil closed $2.50 up with no business reported.
