The bellwether December contract slid $20 to finish at $1,580 per tonne, near the bottom of the day's $1,610-1,517 trading range. Traders said the market's failure to clear key near-term resistance during an early rally sparked a wave of technical selling that kept prices under pressure for the remainder of the day. December climbed to a high of $1,610 shortly after the opening bell, but trade-house selling prevented it from clearing the closely-watched $1,611 level. Late in the day, the market worked its way into a key chart gap stretching from $1,583-1,570 before encountering renewed manufacturer buying. Cocoa prices tumbled $66 per tonne, or 4 percent, on the week, ending at their lowest point since mid-August. Traders said a strong showing on the season's first arrival figures from Ivory Coast, along with reports of steady rainfall in key cocoa-growing regions, have put a damper on buying interest. But after this week's rout, the market may finally find some support from figures released after the close of trading Friday. The latest Commitment of Traders data showed speculators to be net long 18,737 lots as of October 21, down sharply from the 30,000 net long position held two weeks ago. "It's probably slightly positive for the market," said one broker. "Most people were looking for 22,000-24,000 lots." Also after the close of business, the U.S. Department of Agriculture published its first estimate for world cocoa production for the 1997/98 crop year. The USDA pegged total world ouput at 2.76 million tonnes, up nearly two percent from a revised 2.71 million tonnes in 1996/97. In its quarterly tropical products report, the USDA forecast the Ivory Coast crop at 1.18 million tonnes, up from 1.13 million a year ago. The Agriculture Department pegged Ghanian production at 350,000 tonnes, up from 324,000 tonnes last year. While the USDA estimate is toward the high-end of recent industry forecasts, traders said the numbers were not closely watched in the market and were not likely to have much of an impact on prices. The day's volume amounted to 7,930 lots. 271111 MET oct 97
