Signs of continued rainfall in top-grower Ivory Coast also took its toll on the market, dealers said. Benchmark December fell $35 a tonne on Friday to $1,668, after trading from $1,660 to $1,699. Second-position March slumped $31 to $1,700, while the outer months slid $31 to $32. A sharp drop in the pound versus the U.S. dollar sent CSCE cocoa reeling from the opening, as dealers bought up sterling-denominated London positions against New York. The pound was trading down about two cents from the previous close on Friday, at $1.6293, amid a growing belief that Britain was seriously considering joining the European Union's planned single currency. Traders also noted this week's pick up in rainfall in Ivory Coast, which brought some much-needed relief to the country's developing cocoa crop. "There have been some rains in the Ivory Coast, and the market has failed to hold $1,700 in the last few bids, so it ran out of speculative buying today," said one trader. While uncertainty surrounding the potential impact of El Nino continued to underpin the market, dealers said fears about its effect have been largely factored into prices. Technically, the market faced support at the recent low of $1,611, with resistance at $1,702-1,703. The day's volume was estimated at 6,687 lots. 291044 MET sep 97
