Demand remains strong and sellers are finding it hard to keep pace with the spot market. "Tonnage's being traded are small, but that is not because of a lack of buyers it's because sellers have not got the material," said one trader. "People are maybe seeking 1,000 tonnes, but only being able to buy in lots of 100 to 400 tonnes," said another trader. However, despite the increased demand for soy oil caused by tightness in the rape oil market the European traders would be reluctant to seek soy oil outside the European Union unless it was needed to cover an export order which would enable them to recover the 10 percent import duty. Traders said there have been no significant developments in palm oil. But shipping sources in Malaysia said they expected freight space to remain tight until the end of the year when plants in Europe close for the Christmas and New Year break. However, sources in Europe and Malaysia were reluctant to give any further details. "The situation is so sensitive that you will not find anyone willing to talk about it," said one trader. But some traders did say the situation had been building up for a number of years. They said the move towards designated vessels was partly behind the shortage. "Shipping regulations have been steadily tightened over the past 10 years and at peak times it can be very difficult to reposition vessels to meet demand," said one. "Gone are the days when you could load a vessel with palm oil in Malaysia for Europe and send it back loaded with four star (gasoline) - now you have to find a compatible cargo to send back," said another. In the lauric oil sector coconut oil bounced back during the afternoon following some fairly active dealer trading, but palmkernel oil was neglected. At the close Dutch soy oil was offered for December onwards 2.50 to 1.50 guilders up after Oct traded at 137 guilders, Nov at 132 and 133, three up, Dec at 127.50, 128 and 128.50, three up, Jan at 125.50 and 126.50, Feb/Apr at 122.00, 1.25 up and May/Jul at 119 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill.
