Benchmark December futures roe $10 on the day, to close at $1,678 a tonne, after ranging from $1,659 to $1,685. March 1998 delivery gained $12, to $1,714, while the distant months all settled $12 higher. Many dealers opted for the sidelines in what was mainly a breather session after two highly volatile trading days. Speculative short-covering and fund-linked buying accounted for most of the gains, but the day's total volume was a slim 4,867 lots. Dealers said an increasingly favorable outlook for the upcoming West African crop made some buyers hesistant, but worries about the potential impact of El Nino on Indonesia's crop continued to underpin sentiment. "The trade houses remain a little bit short and continue to be so with the latest crop reports that are circulating," one trader said. "On the other side, speculators buy the market because it is in an uptrend and because they see El Nino as a continuing threat," he said. Technically, traders eyed a minor support area at $1,665-1,645 basis December. Above today's session high of $1,685, traders saw further resistance at $1,702-1,703.
