In the absence of fresh news related to the 1997/98 crop, many market participants opted to remain on the sidelines today. Prices stayed within the previous day's ranges throughout the session, as benchmark December futures stop $2 short of challenging Monday's peak of $1,668. Traders said reports of rainfall in leading-grower Ivory Coast appeared to be putting some pressure on the market, but they cautioned that drought fears were unlikely to be allayed until rainfall levels increased. "The market is waiting for news either way," said one trader. "People are waiting to see when larger and more regular rains come into West African regions. Until then, it's just a waiting game." December rose $15 a tonne on the day, to close at $1,658, after ranging from $1,647 to $1,666. The distant months all settled $7 higher. The day's volume was estimated at 5,148 lots.
