Taking its cue from a rebound in London this morning, New York prices initially rose toward key resistance levels. Trade-house selling stopped the uptrend in its tracks, however, and the market gradually slipped beneath the prior day's lows. "It was similar to yesterday in that we tried to rally in early trade and then it got a little sloppy," said one broker. Sell stops were triggered below $1,685 basis December, dragging the market to its finish near the session lows. The leading December contract fell $20 a tonne on the day to $1,671, after trading from $1,667 to $1,710. March futures eased $16 to $1,707, and the distant months finished $13 to $15 lower. The day's volume was estimated at 9,003 lots. Traders said the market would need to hold above today's lows early next week to appear constructive. The trend early next week would hinge in part on tonight's Commitment of Traders report, which was expected show a moderate increase in the speculative long position. Two weeks ago, speculators were net long some 29,000 lots. Otherwise, market participants would be closely monitoring precipitation levels in West Africa, where the 1997/98 harvest still require more rainfall to compensate for an unusually dry July and August. 131017 MET oct 97
