Prices headed lower at the opening bell in line with their due, but trade-linked buying provided a buffer at the lows. Speculators joined the fray as the market reversed direction, dealers said. "There was some decent trade buying down toward the lows, but the real feature was the lack of aggressive speculative liquidation in spite of the lower call," said one trader. "A lot of people were looking to get back into the market on the dips." Benchmark December climbed $14 a tonne, to $1,640, after ranging from $1,617 to $1,647. Spot September rose $19, to $1,624, while the rest of the board closed $17 to $22 higher. An estimated 12,166 lots were exchanged. After the close of trading, the CFTC said in its bi-weekly Commitment of Traders report that speculators were net long 31,215 lots through September 9, toward the high-end of market expectations. Also on Friday, Ivory Coast, the world's leading cocoa producer, said last season's 1996/97 crop totaled 1.1 million tonnes, compared with 1.2 million tonnes in 1995/96. 151025 MET sep 97
