Benchmark December fell $45 a tonne to $1,626, after sinking all the way to a low of $1,615. Traders said the move lower was largely technical, coming after the market failed for two straight days to sustain early rallies. They also cited the growing belief that West Africa's harvest, unlike the cocoa-growing countries in southeast Asia, was not not likely to suffer any El Nino-related weather damage. Earlier in the week, Ivory Coast's commodities minister said that El Nino could reduce the country's upcoming harvest by some 100,000 tonnes, but the claims have since been disputed by a number of meteorologists and industry analysts. In addition, a rumor suggesting that a leading crop surveyor had released a surprisingly high Ivorian estimate sparked jitters among long holders, traders said. Traders said talk circulated early in the trading day that Robert Fish, of London-based Primary Commodity Research, pegged the Ivorian 1997/98 crop at a hefty 1.2 million tonnes. Fish denied his firm had put forth any estimate this week. Analysts said that as long as there was so much uncertainty around the size of the Ivory crop, the world's biggest, the cocoa market would be subject to sudden price swings. "The range of estimates is going to be fairly wide for a while," said Walter Spilka, an analyst with Smith Barney in New York. "Cocoa has a tendency as a commodity to rally and then give back all of its gains," he added, noting that the market had moved sharply higher in early summer, only to pull back just as quickly several months later. An estimated 9,158 lots were traded on the CSCE Thursday.
