In a virtual repeat of the prior session's activity, a bout of speculative buying drove the market up more than $20 a tonne early in the day. Trade-linked selling quickly capped the gains, however, and prices soon drifted back toward unchanged. "There was a little bit of speculative short-covering earlier in the day, but the market was unable to hold the gains," a trader said. Traders also cited discussions tied to a report from Merrill Lynch suggesting that West African cocoa area would avert an El Nino-linked drought. But several traders cautioned against over-emphasizing the Merrill Lynch study, which appeared in the brokerage firm's bi-weekly Commodity Market Trends dated September 5, noting today's unusually low volume left the market vulnerable to sharp price swings. Benchmark December rose $6 a tonne, to $1,671, trading from $1,660 to $1,687. March 1998 delivery rose $5, to $1,700. to $1,660. Volume totaled an estimated 3,503 lots.
