After an early flurry of business, trading tailed off during the afternoon owing to the PORLA dinner being held in Malaysia on Friday. "It has been almost impossible to contact anyone in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon," said one trader. The continuing weakness of the ringgit was the main driving force behind the limit-up close on the KLCE although some European traders said they thought there may have been some Indonesian buying as well. "Also they, traders on the KLCE, like to have strong close ahead of the KLCE annual dinner which is being held on Saturday," said another trader. On Monday the KLCE palm futures will have an extended limit of 75 ringgit following the 50 ringgit limit up close on Friday. Traders expected the higher palm oil prices to trigger activity in the coconut oil market but this failed to happen. "We didn't see any action this afternoon, but I think it will be a different story on Monday," said one. Soft oils were little changed with levels governed more by currency factors than the Chicago futures market. At the close soy oil was 0.50 to one guilder up after Nov traded at 114 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Rape oil was also 0.50 to one guilder higher on a tradeless market. Crude palm oil closed $7.50 up after Nov traded at $537.50 and $540 and Jan/Mar at $552.50 a tonne during the morning. RBD palm oil and olein both closed $7.50 up with one additional trade reported in olein when Dec/Jan fetched $551 a tonne fob Malaysian ports. Coconut oil sellers were unchanged to $5 up while palmkernel oil was $10 higher. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 061102 MET oct 97
