Eurpean vegetable oil close mixed after USDA
LONDON, Sept 12 (Reuter) - Closing offers on the European
vegetable oil market on Friday were mixed following the release
of the USDA's latest crop report.
Traders said the report, which projected 1997/98 soyoil
stocks at 1,780 million pounds against forecasts of 1,795
million pounds in its August report, appeared slightly bullish
and caused some interest, but this soon fizzled out when the
Chicago futures started to tumble.
"Against the lower oil stocks there was the forecast of a
record soybean crop and that is what people are taking notice
of," said one trader.
The USDA pegged soybean production at 2.746 billion bushels
slightly up from its previous forecast of 2.744 billion bushels.
News that India's State Trading Corporation (STC) was
seeking a total of 12,000 tonnes of palm olein underpinned palm
oil prices.
Traders in Malaysia said the STC was seeking one parcel of
palm olein for September 25 to October 5 shipment and a second
parcel for October 1-15 shipment.
The result of the tender was not known as the European
market closed and is not now expected until Saturday.
The latest crop report by Ivan Wong had little impact on the
market.
In his report for August the Malaysian private forecaster
put production at 850,000 tonnes, two percent up from July,
while stocks were estimated at 865,000 tonnes.
The EL Nino weather phenomenon remains a major factor in the
coconut oil market, however sellers were off the day's highs at
the close as buyers refused to follow.
At the close of business Dutch soy oil was one guilder down
to unchanged after Sep traded at 109.75, Oct at 109 and 109.75
and Nov/Jan at 107.25 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill.
Crude palm oil cif Europe finished $5 up after Jan/Mar was
reported traded at $505 a tonne cif, but could not be confirmed.
Palm products closed unchanged to $2.50 up but no further
business was reported.
Coconut oil finished with sellers $5 up while palmkernel oil
was $10 higher.
