The KLCE closed off the day's highs after hitting limit-up, mainly on the weakness of the ringgit against the dollar. However, in Europe sellers were $2.50 to $5 down as the firmer dollar against European currencies countered the rise in Malaysian futures. The full impact of the firm dollar in Europe was offset to some extent by news that India's State Trading Corporation (STC) was seeking up to 12,000 tonnes of palm olein for October 10/25 shipment on Wednesday. Some traders said the STC had bought 12,000 tonnes of olein at $556 a tonne c and f, while others said it had only bought 6,000 tonnes at $573 a tonne. Traders said they were confused because both prices seemed to be out of tune with the market. "$556 a tonne seems a bit low, while $573 is on the high side; hopefully the situation will become clear late in the day," said one. The higher dollar coupled with firm Chicago soy oil futures overnight supported soft oils, with soy oil 0.25 to 0.50 guilders up while rape oil was unchanged. Coconut oil was mixed, with no follow-through business seen from Tuesday. At midday crude palm oil cif Europe was $2.50 down after Dec traded at $545 a tonne cif. Among products RBD palm oil was $5 to $2.50 down after Nov/Dec-Jan/Mar traded at $515, while olein was $5 to $2.50 lower in active trading. Oct olein fetched $543.50, Nov $547.50 and $545, Nov/Dec $545 and $542.50, Jan/Mar $545 and $542.50 and Mar $545 a tonne fob Malaysian ports. Palm stearin sellers were $2.50 down after Dec traded at $407.50 and Jan/Mar $405 a tonne fob Malaysian ports. Coconut oil was $5 down to $17.50 up while palmkernel oil was $12.50 to $10 up.
