Traders said Tuesday's sudden surge in business had been an over- reaction to a lack of origin sellers. "The market is a bit twitchy at the moment and when origin sellers disappear, which they do from time to time, some people start getting worried because they are not covered for later in the year," said one trader. "We all know the market is going to be hit by the El Nino effect at the end of the year, but yesterday sentiment took over after the consumers had been and gone," said another trader. Some forecasts suggest that copra output in the Philippines could drop by between 200,000 and 400,000 tonnes next year due to a dry spell brought about by El Nino. A weak Malaysian ringgit against the dollar and good export data supported palm oil prices. Malaysian cargo surveyor Caleb Brett estimated local palm oil exports during the first ten days of September at 248,700 tonnes against 233,940 during the same period in August. At the close coconut oil was unchanged to $5 up after Sep/Oct traded at $585 and Nov/Dec at $600 a tonne cif. Sep/Oct also traded in a switch with Nov/Dec with a $17.50 premium paid for the Nov/Dec, traders said. Crude palm oil cif Europe closed unchanged to $2.50 down while products were unchanged to $2.50 higher. Dutch soy oil closed 0.50 guilders up to 0.25 guilders down after Sep traded at 110, Oct at 109.50 and Nov/Jan at 107 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Rape oil finished unchanged to 0.50 guilders up after Oct traded at 108.50 and 108.25 and Nov/Jan at 108.75 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill.
