Traders said the market was nervous with concern growing over the El Nino weather phenomenon effect that is expected to hit coconut oil output early in 1998. "A lot of people are thinking it's time to buy now while stocks last," said one trader. Traded levels during Thursday afternoon were around $5 to $10 above those seen on Tuesday when there was a sudden surge in business. Copra output in the Philippines is forecast to drop by 200,000 to 400,000 tonnes next year as a result of dry weather brought on by El Nino. However, although output is forecast to be lower the quality of the oil produced could be slightly better. "What normally happens is that once the coconuts are cut they are left to dry. Any rain about slows the process which can affect the quality, so a long dry spell is good from that point of view, but the difference is hardly noticeable," said a trader. Another effect of El Nino could be a drop in power supplies to the crusher. "Most of the mills are supplied by hydro electricity and if the water level drops there could be "brown outs" which means the wattage is reduced and the plants cannot run at full capacity," said another trader. Coconut oil closed with gains of $10 to $15 a tonne after Oct/Nov traded at $600, Nov/Dec $605 and Dec/Jan at $610, $612.50 and $615 a tonne cif. Trading palm and soft oils has been slow ahead of data due out on Friday and Monday. On Friday the USDA is due to release some crop numbers while on Monday PORLA is scheduled to release it's data for August palm oil output, stocks and exports. At the close Dutch soy oil was one guilder up to unchanged while rape oil was 0.50 guilders down to unchanged after Oct/Jan traded at 108.50 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Crude palm oil finished unchanged to $2.50 up while products were mixed at $2.50 up to $2.50 down. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 121112 MET sep 97
