Prices slumped at the opening in line with their due, but the selling pressure abated before the market could test lows set late last week. The market gradually recovered toward midsession, and light speculative buying helped push prices above unchanged ahead of the close. "There was a late-day short-covering rally that seemed to be technically-inspired more than anything else," a trader said. The market's ability to hold above key support despite the release of somewhat bearish CFTC figures may have aided sentiment, he added. The latest Commitment of Traders data showed speculators (non-commercial Aplus non-reportable) to be net long 31,215 lots as of September 9, or some 2,000 to 3,000 lots greater than what many traders had anticipated. December settled at $1,651 a tonne, after trading between $1,621 and $1,655. Spot September climbed $17, to $1,641, while the rest of the board rose between $8 to $9. The day's volume was light, reaching an estimated 4,747 lots by the close. Traders blamed the low turnover on a dearth of new fundamental developments over the past few days. Traders said the market could be vulnerable to a sudden slide if rainfall picked up in West Africa. Market operators were also on the alert for any new assessments of the upcoming Ivorian crop. Technically, December faced support at last week's low of $1,615. If that level were breached, the next important target was seen at $1,585-1,570, a chart gap from mid-August. To the upside, December would need to clear $1,655 to gather any significant momentum. 161010 MET sep 97
